Bethany Hobbs is a photographer whose practice is rooted in storytelling. With a BA (Hons) in Photography from Brighton University, she works primarily in portraiture and related still life.
Her current project documents the lives of Austrian descendants in the UK who have recently received Austrian citizenship. Combining archival imagery, portraiture and (written) prose, the project explores histories marked by displacement and loss. Welcomed into the homes of survivors and the generations who followed, Bethany seeks to preserve these voices and bear witness to these remarkable lives. She is supported by the Austrian Cultural Forum and Anglo-Austrian Society.
Prior to extended travel in Australia, Bethany took television and theatre stills alongside documentary projects such as Wild Basketry by Ruby Taylor, articles for Rakesprogress magazine and Makers Atelier,
Her portfolio includes work for productions such as Mark Kermode; Secrets of Cinema, Egon Schiele: Dangerous Desires, BAFTA-winning Lee Miller: Life on the Front Line and Mark Kermode: Secrets of Cinema. She has worked with the BFI, Gecko Theatre Company and Hydrocracker in addition to the BBC.
A major new exhibition, "No Way Home: Viennese Jews in Exile," for which she is the solo exhibiting artist, opens at the Jewish Museum Vienna in September 2026- April 2027. She was also selected to exhibit in the ECO exhibition as part of PhotoFringe 2024.
